Watts Riots
The Watts riots took place in the Watts neighborhoods of Los Angeles from August 11 to August 17, 1965. It resulted in 34 deaths, 1,032 injuries, 3,438 arrests, and over 40 million dollars in property damage. It was one of Los Angeles worst riots. The African American rioters burned cars, looted, and damaged stores. Over 14,000 national guard troops were sent to stop the riots. It was found that the cause of the riots was high unemployment rates, bad housing, and bad schooling. After the riots the city leaders failed to improve the measures of before. Between 31,000 and 35,000 people participated in the riots. These riots did not do much for the push of civil rights. It only promoted violence for the answer. it was a hard blow to the civil rights movement especially how Martian Luther King Jr. did not believe in violent protests or riots.
